The largest port in Malaysia was ranked 12th in the World Container League 2015.
However, PKA said it would expect 2017 to remain challenging for the industry.
Port Klang saw a 10.8% growth in container handling, with a total of 13.17 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) registered last year, compared with 11.89 million TEUs.
According to Port Klang Authority (PKA), Northport handled 3.22 million TEUs, while Westports handled 9.95 million TEUs, in 2016.
In terms of transshipment throughput, Port Klang handled 9.07 million TEUs in 2016. This represented a growth of 14.3 % from 7.97 million TEUs in 2015.
According to PKA, of the total transshipment throughput, Northport handled 1.66 million TEUs and Westports handled 7.41 million TEUs last year.
“The positive growth of Port Klang is attributed to several factors, mainly its efficient and productive terminal operators, strong support of Port Klang’s shipping and logistics community and the port’s supply driven port facilities as well as advanced state of the art cargo handling equipment,” PKA said in a statement.
